Lot description

VICTOR PALLA | Photograph. Untitled (woman and triangles), printed ca.1952. Vintage gelatin silver print. 23.5x17.5cm. Unique print, never before reproduced, manipulated in the dark room and printed by the artist. No negative exists since the print is the result of a montage. This piece is akin to the Surrealist and Constructivist sensibilities. With the start (1946) of the General Arts Exhibitions organized by the Fine Arts National Society (SNBA) in Lisbon, photography asserted its independence and was present in 3 of those exhibitions. A high point was reached when, in 1952, Fernando Lemos displayed his surrealist photographs alongside the work of painters Fernando Azevedo and Vespeira at Jalco House. This lot (and lots 2/6 and 11/12) are good examples of Palla's interest in the Surrealist movement. Technical information: the “broken glass” effect is obtained through multiple printing of the same image and the use of "masks" to obliterate parts of the negative.
